Why is Cultural Translation so Important?

Translation is about so much more than simply a literal translation of each word. Often words in one culture can obtain a different meaning than those in another, sometimes extensively so. Serious taboos in one culture can be neutral and meaningless in another culture, even when the language is shared. Translation must be sensitive to the local cultures, customs, ways of expression or even local distaste for certain politicians or public figures.

According to an article on Kwintessential, Fiat released an ad in Italy in which actor Richard Gere drives a Lanica Delta from Hollywood to Tibet. Gere is hated in China for being an outspoken supporter of the Dalai Lama – there was a huge online uproar on Chinese message boards commenting that they would never buy a Fiat car.

When translating materials for museums, galleries, or other cultural institutions, particular attention must be paid to this set of rules. Local expectations and discomforts must be considered when translating ancient, foreign or deeply significant and sensitive historical and artistic pieces.
